Read full description of the books:
A poignant debut novel of an Irish gypsy boy's childhood in the 1950's by the author of the bestselling memoir A Rip in Heaven. Ireland, 1959#58; Young Christy Hurley is a Pavee gypsy, traveling with his father and extended family from town to town, carrying all their worldly possessions in their wagons. Christy carries with him a burden of guilt as well, haunted by the story of his mother's death in childbirth. The peripatetic life is the only one Christy has ever known, but when his grandfather dies, everything changes. His father decides to settle down temporarily in a town where Christy and his cousin can attend mass and receive proper schooling. But they are still treated as outsiders. As Christy's exposure to a different life causes him to question who he is and where he belongs, the answer may lie with an old newspaper photograph and a long-buried family secret that could change his life forever...

Read information about the authorMy first book, A Rip in Heaven, A Memoir of Murder and Its Aftermath, was published in 2004, and was a surprise bestseller. Writing it was the hardest thing I've ever done (including giving birth twice), and I often wondered if I did the right thing, in writing it. But thousands of e-mails from comforted victims and homicide survivors have ultimately convinced me that, despite the pain involved, that book has done some good for people, so I'm proud of it. The Outside Boy, published in 2010, was my first novel. And now The Crooked Branch is about to hit the shelves, and BESTSELLER LISTS EVERYWHERE. (For writers, maintaining a positive attitude and slightly distorted ego can be super-helpful!)
Even more biographical stuff, for the less-easily bored:
I was born in Spain, but grew up mostly outside of Washington DC, in Gaithersburg, Maryland. After college, I spent several years in Belfast, Ireland, writing and bartending, before setting off for New York City with a plan to infiltrate the publishing industry. That plan worked a little too well, and I ended up spending ten years falling in love with New York, and its abundant book community. When my first book was published by NAL in 2004, I had the wonderfully unusual experience of working as a member of the sales force for my own book.
When my first daughter was born, I made the very difficult decision to leave my beloved, taxing, very full-time job in publishing. My second daughter was born a couple years later, just two weeks after my Outside Boy book tour. I still live in New York, with my excellent Irish husband and our family, and I am now focusing my efforts on a full-time writing career.
I am a founding member of the Dorks of the Round Table, a small tight-knit community of New York writers with big plans for world-literature domination. Wish us luck.
